Trip Summary:
8-night trip including 3 days working within a community co-operative of Berber potters to make and bake your own pots. From gathering scrub to fuel the mud-built kilns, to decorating techniques with henna and vegetable pigments, and even learning how the clay is made. Price includes all materials and cash donation to ceramics co-operative association. You will have a pre-fired unglazed item to decorate and take home with you as well as your own glazed objects for onward shipping.
Suitable for both amateur and experienced potters/ceramic artists. Not for complete beginners.

Day 1
|
Arrive Marrakech. We collect you from airport and take you to your hotel. You have day free to explore the city depending on arrival time. Evening meal out in local Moroccan restaurant. |

Day 2 |
Depart in 4x4 via Tizi n' Tichka Mountain Pass to city of Ouarzazate. Time to visit local kasbah museum and artisans. Opportunity to sketch out Berber patterns and research ideas. |

Day 3
|
Continue journey towards desert region by crossing Middle-Atlas Mountains and passing through the Draa Valley with it's lush oasis of date palms. Local potters selling their wares at the roadside. Arrive in our base of Zagora by lunchtime. Afternoon visit to the pottery collective in Tamegroute to meet our hosts. Stay in charming riad hotel in Zagora with evening meal. |

Day 4
|
Shuttle in 4x4 to Tamegroute pottery (30 mins drive) early morning to start the workshops. Working with local Berbers to pick up local techniques and to throw a few pots of your own. First batch of pots/objects to be finished by evening time to allow for sun-baking the following day. Lunch with local families. Evening return to riad in Zagora for dinner. |

| Day 5 |
Day to learn decorative techniques on pre-baked ceramic bowls. You will also help gather and prepare the wood and scrub which is used to stoke the mud-built kilns. Finish shaping your pots/objects made for the firing process. These objects are first dried in the sun for at least 24 hours before firing the following day. More pots can also be made, coil pots and/or pedal driven wheel. Items to be clearly identified for each potter. Items can be packaged and posted to Europe (at extra cost). |

Application of local glazes. Pots placed into kilns for firing along with local products. |

Return trip to Marrakech in 4x4, stopping for visits to kasbahs and local artisans as required. Lunch en route. |

Free day to explore Marrakech at your own pace - we recommend a visit to the Museum of Marrakech, the Ensemble Artisanale and also into the side-markets off the Place des Epices to discover all manner of bric-a-brac and African artefacts. The deeper into the souks you go, the cheaper prices will get!Evening Meal for the group in a local restaurant in the medina. |
