Summary:

A week-long trip from Marrakech into the Sahara desert via the High Atlas Mountains to capture landscapes, light, colour and textures. Acclaimed photographer Suzanne Porter has years of professional experience photographing documentary subjects across Africa. On this trip she instructs and inspires you on how to get the best possible pictures.

Suzanne first visited Marrakech in 1988 - she has the photo with a snake around her neck infront of the Koutoubia mosque to prove it.  But she didn't return until 2006, when she was asked to photograph the new edition of Rough Guides Marrakech. She has since photographed more than six travel guide books in Morocco as well as working for local magazines and events.  She has visited more than 20 African countries whilst photographing press and fund raising campaigns for international aid agencies and features for travel magazines such as Wanderlust, Travel Africa and Sunday Times Travel. Her photos have been exhibited the British Museum and are currently on display at the Café des Epices in Marrakech.

Day 2
FRI

Morning: Photography tour of the labyrinth of the medina and its souks and spices.Led by Suzanne and escorted by Official City Guide, plenty of opportunity for portraits of people at work – cobblers, tailors, blacksmiths, bakers, butchers and merchants.

Afternoon: individual free time for own assignments – unaccompanied.

We recommend dinner in the bustling Place Jemaa el Fna amongst acrobats, musicians, peddlers and sooth-sayers...not to mention sizzling barbecue grills for a delicious outdoor supper.
Plenty of opportunity for dusk and night-time photography.

Day 3
SAT

An exhilarating drive across the Tizi-n-Tichka mountain pass in 4x4, winding and twisting at high altitudes towards the great South of Morocco. The lanscape is mesmerizing and the geology constantly changing. We’ll be stopping randomly to photograph whatever catches our eye along the way – people going about their daily lives, roadside cafes, mountain villages, wild flowers etc…

Early afternoon arrive
at world-famous Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, crossing the stepping-stones of the river, to reach this carefully restored fortified village. The Berber architecture, decoration, texture and rich colours of the Kasbah are a film-photographer’s treat and it’s no wonder it has featured in so many major movies. The soft afternoon light here is truly special.
Dinner and relax in hotel in Ouarzazate and review the days work.

N.B. This is the last opportunity for re-charging batteries and backing-up data to disc/memory card as for next 2 nights there is no electricity.

Day 4
SUN

Opportunity for sunrise shots of Kasbah Touarirt near to the hotel.
4x4 rive over the arid Anti-Atlas Mountain to the market–town of Agdz, then off-road through the lush Drâa Valley oases and on towards the Sahara! Lunch stop at wonderful shaded riad garden in Zagora and time (hopefully) to dip into the back-streets of nearby Amzrou, formerly inhabited by Jewish silversmiths.
As we head further south, we notice the change in regional traditional dress of both men and women. You will be advises on cultural etiquette before photographing people (especially women) on our journey.
Evening time we cross the ridge of Jbel Bani to arrive at M’Hamid el Ghizlane. Our bivouac camp is just beyond the village at the edge of the desert. Time to relax before dinner in the company of your Saharaoui nomad hosts and you can sleep on mats under the stars or in the tents woven from camel-wool.

N.B. Clients are strongly advised to keep camera equipment & lenses sealed in cling-film and zip-lock bags. Or else to bring non-valuable apparatus. Fine sand can easily enter and destroy shutter mechanisms. You have been warned!

Day 5
MON

After breakfast we head into the village to collect basic supplies for the day and visit the Monday morning souk. We will have some time to capture scenes of village-life, before heading off into the desert. Camels, windswept dunes, thorny acacia trees, strange plants in lunar landscapes – infinite abstract possibilities! Lunch in the shade of an oasis, where local nomadic families bring their donkeys to gather water. Then we continue in 4x4 to the highest dunes of Erg Chegaga in time for sunset shots of the sea of dunes that stretchs for miles.

Overnight in bivouac camp and sleep in candle-lit nomad-style woven tents or under the African stars.

Day 6
TUES

Early morning shots of the dunes, the shadows and the extraordinary colours then departure before the sun gets too high to continue across the desert in 4x4, over the dried flat expanse of lake of Irikki where you may just capture a mirage. After 3 hours we reach tarmac in Foum Zguid and then continue to Tazenakht for lunch. Here we will be able to photograph the Berber carpet-weavers. After lunch onwards for a long 6 hour drive back to Marrakech. We’ll be able stop along the way whenever something catches the eye.
The shifting dunes, the stunted trees, the lush oasis...was it all a mirage?
Dinner at hotel in Marrakech.
